What is Stained glass?

Stained glass is an old art form - an image created from pieces of colored glass that are joined together by metals - lead profiles. The revolution in stained glass technology was brought about by Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848-1933). His aspiration to show nature, its color, and details as accurately as possible in stained glass windows led to the development of Favrile glass and the Tiffany technique - stained glass is cut very precisely, wrapped in copper, and finally soldered together by soldering. This brought great expressive possibilities, display of the smallest details and shapes, and joining of glass parts in three dimensions - that is how the famous Tiffany lamps were created.

History of Favrile glass

The oldest glass found in human civilization comes from Ancient Egypt, with some technologically more advanced specimens dating to around 1450 BC. The technique of blown glass originated in Syria in the first century BC., and was perfected by the Romans. The art of stained glass originated in Byzantium from the 4th to the 6th century AD, and reached its creative peak in Western Europe.

The oldest fully preserved stained glass windows are located in the Augsburg Cathedral in Germany and date from 1050 - 1150. During his travels in Europe and North Africa, Louis Comfort Tiffany was impressed by the medieval stained glass windows and the color of the glass used for them. In his time, when making stained glass, there were many interventions on the surface of the glass - painting on glass, etching, etc., which interfered with the passage of light and the natural transparency of the glass.

Tiffany wanted to incorporate color and texture into the glass itself so that light could pass through it unhindered and highlight its natural structure and color. He experimented by exposing molten glass to a series of metal oxides and gases. He used oxides of chromium, silver, gold, cobalt, and even uranium in various combinations to achieve the desired colors and transparency. The result is Favrile glass (the name comes from the Latin word fabrilis which means handmade), which was patented by Tiffany. He spent thirty years learning the "art of making glass" and improved the technology of production so much that he created glass of unsurpassed color and beauty.

He contributed that today there are palettes of art glass for making stained glass of various colors, color combinations, structures and levels of transparency. Today, there are several factories in the world that traditionally produce artistically rolled glass, and each of them continues to develop its pallets and improve its manufacturing technology. All this has contributed to the fact that today, stained glass windows are widely used not only in public and religious buildings, but also in residential interiors.

About Vitrail

Vitrail is a "picture in the light", which changes with the illumination. It can be illuminated with natural light, or artificial light, it can be observed when the light source is behind or in front of it. It is different every time, but it always enriches the space in which it is located. Its design adapts to the decorative style of the space so that it can decorate both classic and modern interiors. Depending on the glass used to make it, it can be very transparent and "light" or it can provide complete privacy. It can be installed in construction joinery: entrance and partition doors, windows, partition doors and walls, and screens; it can be installed in furniture, showcases, kitchens, it can be used to make plates for tables and consoles. The implementation of stained glass in making mirrors of various shapes and dimensions is especially interesting.
